06 Small Dwellings - Small Ideas!

This post is dedicated to small space design. My take on small spaces is this, I love them! I thrive on the challenge. Questions I'm always asks "where am I going to put all my stuff?" and "how do I layout such a small footprint?"

I'm a believer that smaller and more energy efficient homes will be seen more and more in the future of home design. I see big changes coming for the future of housing even though the size of the average family home has grown over the last few decades.Concerns about the environment, energy and the cost of living are causing people to re-examine their need for larger homes. Smaller homes and spaces doesn't mean you have to settle. Interior architecture and decoration in modest size rooms can have a big style statement with tons of warmth and impact if a plan is set in place and a deep deep breath is taken......like you would during a yoga session:)

Last year I really put a personal push designing project plans that maximize storage solutions (up-sizing) and specifying multi-functional performance options for appliances, plumbing fixtures, furniture and lighting systems. My clients always love to see options whether or not they entirely go that route. I will be touching base A LOT on this topic in home design blog posts as its a MOD LIFE  lifestyle choice. To live with a little less..... we are all striving to do this right??

Controlling clutter and expecting furniture and appliances to perform multiple functions takes some planning. Then there's the challenge of decorating. Going the extra step of re-sizing your belongings for your space and using color, texture and light to create an illusion of spaciousness can be rewarding, but the frustration factor can take its toll, too. If you have your doubts, ask anyone who's ever tried to get a large piece of furniture down a narrow hallway or around a tight corner.

My very charismatic client and friend Jody Kliffer, is a happy condo owner at Harbourfront Residences at Three Sisters in Saint John. Jody called for design help for his open-plan living room kitchen area. When asked what are his challenges? Simply put he said " I have a great new urban condo that I'm moving into soon and because of its size limitations I need help!"

The first meeting we discussed things like de-cluttering and letting things go. This is a typical challenge clients face and its usually a bit stressful. Jody had no trouble at all saying goodbye to "stuff". Also discussed was how he was going to use his new open plan room? Entertaining was of utmost importance for his 'urban status' and because the kitchen and living room are literally right next to each other, the two areas have to coexist in harmony together. A few design tricks I like to use often is adding color, texture and light to create an illusion of spaciousness.

Space Plan

In Jody's case the walls were kept light capturing as much natural light as possible from the almost floor to ceiling windows. By keeping the walls in a light tone, the natural light is reflected and bounces around the room on bright sunny days:) and on the not so sunny days, the room still feels light and airy.

I chose a sofa from our Canadian furniture company Van Gogh Design. Van Gogh has a studio line with small pieces. This 1/2 sectional works into the industrial mix feel of the space.

Whether you're downsizing your space because of a shift in your family dynamic or setting up your first apartment, managing a small space can present unique challenges. My advise is embrace the challenge, change can be exciting! Big thanks to Fran Menton director of Marketing & Events Harbourfront Residences for all your assistance with the shoot!

05 FASHION AND INTERIOR DESIGN- HOW MUCH IN COMMON??

Part of my work with interior design is to research. I always find myself crossing into the fashion industry world when researching new products and trends. Sometimes I feel like I'm obsessed with Haute Couture, pre-collection shows on youtube and fashion journalism. Interior Design can often be traced back to the influence in the fashion industry runways and is visibly seen throughout product displays at industry shows like annual International Interior Design Show in Toronto. What's trending in fashion is seen through influences in new pattern, color and textures season to season. You also cannot ignore runway set designs and music selections but that's for another post!

I believe that no matter what design discipline your are in, you can't ignore the fashion industry. Nicole Miller's 2013 Fall Collection recently caught my eye as I'm increasingly using a vast variety of metal material applications in my designs. The influence of reflective metal qualities are seen in her show and shown below in the fabric of the models pants. Her blouse is also showing a metal stitch pattern, the over all feel for me is NYC  attitude. This is a good example of the fashion crossover into the world of interiors. OK I must summarize her collection or it wouldn't be me :) Her collection for me speaks bold not boring or conservative, a masculine feel, contemporary and strong. The second model shot is showing one of the favorite pieces this year that seems to be holding its position in fashion and interior design, the faux fur vest (definitely a MOD NOD piece).

The influence of metal and metal properties are often seen in interior design.

The space below showcases a feel of urban luxury with a bit of an attitude. A metal mesh drapery application adds a beautiful alternative to the traditional. Metal panels paired with a faux throw can exude city chic glam. Architectural Drapery offered through Whiting and Davis.

Nicole Miller's Spring 2013 Ready- To- Wear Collection showcases strong floral's which we are also seeing in the world of interiors and are now trending. Furniture manufacturers are still offering a huge selection of floral fabric choices. Floral prints are also now applied to furniture legs and other consumer products.

04 FLOR - Inspiring modular floorcoverings

I remember the day I had first saw FLOR modular surface coverings in an advertisement while surfing the web for commercial flooring. You know your excited when your heart starts beating a bit quicker then normal (yes some designers do get effected like that). I thought to myself, how exiting to see a company focused on modular carpet push into the residential world of interiors. Giving it the MOD nod !

Modular carpet tiles for residential....what a perfect idea! You have the flexibility of replacing the tiles if required over time. Having the choice of wall-to-wall installation or creating an area rug is also really cool. You can choose bold colors, soft muted colors, a combination of the two or stripes to hide life's messes!! If you are going for luxurious look and require a density and pile choice to suit that application they have it. In my opinion, it is the versatility that what makes this carpet system a great design choice.

03 KITCHENS TO SLOW DOWN IN!

When I am designing kitchens for today's life of a mod family, I always ask the client how much time they spend in the kitchen, and how do they see their new kitchen being used? I think whether you are a budding chef, have a large or small family and or love to entertain, your kitchen should rise up to meet you with inspiration. An organized kitchen with plenty of work space and good material selection should start with a solid logical plan. There is always challenges when dealing with too much volume or too little, and It’s completely amazing what you can do with what volume you are given. My very busy clients wanted a kitchen that embodies warm modernism with a ton of work surface for cooking. The open plan kitchen had to function well for family life, entertaining and a lot of baking! They wanted to try to be environmentally conscious whenever possible, so the 100% recycled counter-tops were chosen among other responsible materials throughout their home.

Another passion of mine? Designing fireplaces as a kitchen focal point (if the space permits). A wood fireplace can be a very cool idea to integrate as secondary cooking area. Can you visualize  authentic pizzas and French bread?? Check out a great example (located to the side of the blog) in HOUZZ of a unique kitchen project which embodies all the qualities of mod living. The designers ideas showcase the selection of perfect material choices.  Wood beams and fire are the perfect combination for getting inspired in the kitchen!!!

02 SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY

Over two years ago I met a crazy cool guy with colossal vision who has inspired me to great lengths, in both the way I approach design and the way I feel about  future development in New Brunswick. Paul Arsenault is a sustainable developer who is paving the way for green carbon conscious development. When speaking to Paul you will find a quiet humble guy who wants to create mixed-use development opportunities for builders and  for  people who want to live a more earth friendly lifestyle. It`s getting back to community values.

URBAN VILLAGES

The Synergy Group's project, Hall's Creek Villages, is going to truly represent country living in the city of Moncton!

01 A CELEBRATION OF WOOD

I'm embarking on what is really my first go at blogging! I've never been a writer just a designer who loves to talk (those that know me well would agree!!). So let me start MOD connecting with you!

Meet Phil Savage. He is the owner of Savages Sculpture.  I met Phil late last year and we have already collaborated on 3 amazing table designs, and currently are working on another 2!

My clients have been thrilled with his work….they almost feel like they have a new addition to their family (I have a total crush on Phillips work, can you tell?)

In addition to seeing Phil's work at Design 4 Space inc's design haus studio, his work is also shown at Handworks Gallery off King St. in Saint John  http://savagesculpture.com/home.html
